ABS evaluates the impact of nuclear reactor on LNG carrier

A recent study by ABS and Herbert Engineering Corporation has analyzed the impact of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology on a 145,000 m³ LNG carrier's design, operation, and emissions. The report, part of ABS's Requirements for Nuclear Power Systems for Marine and Offshore Applications, aims to enhance understanding of nuclear propulsion's feasibility and safety. Key areas highlighted include heat management, shielding, and weight distribution, crucial for future regulations. The study suggests HTGR technology could enable zero-emission operations and faster transit speeds, with vessels not needing refueling for about six years. ABS's Patrick Ryan notes that while this technology is proven on land, its marine applications are still developing, with the potential to significantly reduce shipping emissions.

Development of Non-Major Ports in India through Convergence

India's coastline spans over 7,500 kms and features 12 major ports and approximately 200 non-major ports, vital for trade, fishing, tourism, and local economies. Major ports are managed by the MoPSW, while non-major ports fall under State Maritime Boards and local governments. Currently, only about 65 non-major ports handle cargo, with many serving local fishing vessels and passenger ferries. To fully realize their potential, a collaborative approach among government, communities, and private stakeholders is essential for sustainable development of these ports.
