Shipping capacity in Asia strong despite global shocks: UNCTAD report
According to the UNCTAD's latest Review of Maritime Transport, Asia remains the best-connected region to global shipping networks, with China, South Korea, and Singapore leading the global liner shipping connectivity index. Vietnam has seen a remarkable 199% increase in connectivity since 2006. However, recent conflicts in the Red Sea have disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal, causing significant congestion in Asian ports, with waiting times nearly doubling in places like Singapore. Climate-induced droughts have also impacted the Panama Canal, increasing shipment distances and costs. Meanwhile, South-South trade routes are growing, and inland terminals offer potential for enhancing regional cooperation.

Galathea Bay: New major port can be game changer
The mega international container transshipment port at Galathea Bay in Great Nicobar Island has been designated as India’s 13th major port, strategically positioned on the East-West international trade route. With a natural draught of 20 mtrs, the ICTP is expected to capture transshipment cargo from Indian east coast ports, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, potentially saving India $200-220 million annually in transshipment charges currently paid to overseas ports. However, development faces challenges due to its ecologically sensitive location. The project, estimated at ₹43,000 crore and developed through public-private partnerships, aims to enhance India’s maritime trade capabilities while addressing environmental concerns.

India looks to increase shipping fleet & container manufacturing
Indian exports, especially in low-margin, high-volume sectors like textiles, may face challenges due to the escalating conflict involving Iran. In response, the government is working to expand domestic container production and enhance the shipping fleet, as global shipping rates have more than doubled amid the ongoing Middle East war. The World Bank reported significant global supply chain stress due to disruptions in West Asia, with shipping costs remaining high. Exporters are urging the establishment of a recognized Indian shipping line to mitigate reliance on international firms, particularly to protect Indian MSMEs from increasing freight charges.
