India Maritime Week 2025 from Oct 27: Fadnavis urges Centre to establish permanent hub for maritime development in Mumbai
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged the Centre to establish a permanent maritime development centre in Mumbai to strengthen India’s maritime sector. Reviewing preparations for India Maritime Week 2025, scheduled from October 27–31 at NESCO, Goregaon, he said the initiative would boost Maharashtra’s global profile and attract major investments. The event, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by PM Modi, will host over 100 countries and 500 exhibitors, showcasing Mumbai’s growing role in India’s maritime and economic development.

Korea, India Partner to Merge Shipbuilding Strengths
India is seeking shipbuilding cooperation with South Korea to boost its maritime capabilities. While South Korea leads in shipbuilding technology but lacks labor, India offers abundant manpower but needs advanced skills and infrastructure. Shri T.K. Ramachandran stressed that this partnership could benefit both nations. India aims to become a top-five shipbuilding power by 2047 by expanding its fleet and increasing “Made in India” ships. Cooperation with countries like South Korea is seen as crucial for technology transfer, investment, and enhancing national security amid global shipping volatility.

NAMM pledges continued support for safe navigation, sustainability, and seafarer development. The association reaffirms its commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime potential and ensuring a prosperous, ocean-conscious future for the nation.

$3.4bn shipyard in Tamil Nadu to build naval, cargo ships: Govt
India plans to establish a major shipbuilding hub in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, capable of constructing both naval warships and cargo vessels, including Very Large Crude Carriers, according to Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Speaking at Indian Maritime University’s 10th Convocation, he highlighted the project's strategic value. Defence firms Cochin Shipyard Limited and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will invest ₹30,000 crore ($3.4 billion) in the initiative. A Detailed Project Report is underway to finalize technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the project.

JNPA Launches India's First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet with Swappable Batteries
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority launched India’s first fleet of electric heavy trucks with swappable battery technology at Nhava Sheva, marking a major step in green logistics. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the initial 50 trucks, aiming for 80 by year-end and 90% electrification of JNPA’s 600-vehicle fleet by 2026. A dedicated battery swapping station was also inaugurated. The move supports India’s net-zero goals, Maritime India Vision 2030, and National Logistics Policy, positioning JNPA as a sustainability leader among Indian ports.
